Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen) troubleshooting

Choose the symptom actually shown by 2nd generation — the model number is on the label on the base. Ring device; wired/battery power, Chime/Alarm integration, subscription and Wi-Fi band vary. Error codes remain separate records because the same characters can mean different things on another platform.

Which units this covers, and how to tell yours is one of them

Every answer below is scoped to these model identifiers. A neighbouring model in the same line can use a different part, a different reset sequence or a different radio, so matching the identifier before following a procedure is the step that decides whether the rest of the page applies to you.

Published specification

What is true of this model and changes how you fix it

These are the properties that decide which procedure applies. Each is read from the manufacturer’s own published figures for this model, not carried over from a sibling that shares its retail name.

Video
1080p HD with Live View and colour night vision.
Field of view
143° diagonal, 115° horizontal, 59° vertical.
Power
A 1.9 m Micro USB power cable and power adapter. Note Micro USB rather than USB-C — a USB-C cable will not fit, and the connector's orientation-sensitivity is a genuine cause of intermittent charging complaints on this model.
Privacy cover
A physical privacy cover is supplied in the box. A cover left closed produces a black image with the camera otherwise working perfectly, and it is checked from the hardware rather than from the app.
Wi-Fi
802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz only.
Bandwidth
Ring states a minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps for optimal performance.
Operating range
−20°C to 45°C (−4°F to 113°F). The upper limit is lower than Ring's outdoor cameras, which is consistent with it being an indoor device.
Power path
Mains adapter into a standard outlet. Switched outlets and outlets on a circuit that trips are the two failure modes that present as device faults. Use the supplied adapter — third-party adapters that supply the right voltage at the wrong current are a common cause of intermittent restarts.
Service tier
Some capabilities are subscription-gated. A feature that stops working on a date with no other change is worth checking against the plan's renewal before it is treated as a fault.

Exact questions

Questions that only have an answer for the Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen)

Each answer below uses this model’s own published figures. The same question asked about a different model in the line has a different answer, which is why it is answered here rather than on a general page.

The Indoor Cam shows a black picture but seems to be working.+

Check the physical privacy cover before anything else. This model ships with one, it is closed by hand, and a closed cover produces a black image while live view, audio and motion events all behave normally. Nothing in the app reports its position.

What cable does the Indoor Cam (2nd Gen) use?+

Micro USB — a 1.9 m cable and adapter are supplied, with a 3 m USB-A to Micro USB cable sold separately. It is not USB-C. Micro USB is also orientation-sensitive and wears, which makes it a real cause of intermittent power on this camera specifically.

What is this camera's field of view?+

143° diagonal, 115° horizontal and 59° vertical. That is a wide horizontal view for a small indoor camera but a narrow vertical one, so mounting height changes what it covers more than people expect.

Can I use the Indoor Cam outside?+

No. Its operating range is −20°C to 45°C and it has no weather rating — Ring's outdoor cameras are specified as weather resistant and this one is not. Using it outdoors is outside specification regardless of how sheltered the position looks.

Does the Indoor Cam support 5 GHz?+

No — 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz only. Joining the phone explicitly to the 2.4 GHz network before starting setup avoids the most common failure on this model.

How much bandwidth does it need?+

Ring states a minimum of 2 Mbps upload for optimal performance. Below that the encoder lowers bitrate, so live view goes soft and stutters — which is the specified behaviour at insufficient bandwidth rather than a camera fault.
